SYRINGOMYELIA 2013: Day 3

Day 3 of the Sydney SYRINGOMYELIA 2013 conference consisted of two sessions:

Arachnoiditis & Post-traumatic Syringomyelia
The session began with a detailed review of post-traumatic syringomyelia which outlined its natural history, causes and treatment. Additional presentations were focused on the surgical management of syringomyelia due to complex pathologies including arachnoiditis at the foramen magnum and spinal arachnoiditis ossificans.

Pediatrics
An extensive review of syringomyelia in children was presented. Subsequent presentations included a study on duraplasty vs. extradural decompression for children with Chiari related syringomyelia and on other aspects of the surgical management of Chiari malformation and syringomyelia in the pediatric age group.

Next Steps
Following lunch, Dr. Stoodley challenged the audience regarding the future direction of the SYRINGOMYELIA conferences. It was decided to create a Steering Committee to guide the development of an international syringomyelia organization that would (1) network with other syringomyelia organizations worldwide, (2) develop a syringomyelia-specific outcome scale, and (3) select the venue for the next SYRINGOMYELIA international meeting.
