Bony Anomalies: C1 spina bifida
Bony anomalies are common in the Chiari I malformation. An MRI of the cervical spine, which can be ordered to include the posterior fossa, should be assessed for clues to possible bony anomalies. If suspected, a 3D CT scan can be performed. The 3D CT above shows a posterior view of the skull and upper cervical spine. The arch of the C1 vertebrae is incomplete, a condition known as C1 spina bifida. The arrows point to the residual C1 arch with a gap in between.
